Call your girlfriend
It's time you had the talk
Give your reasons
Say it's not her fault
But you just met somebody new
Tell her not to get upset, second-guessing everything you said and done
And then when she gets upset tell her how you never mean to hurt no one
Then you tell her that the only way her heart will mend is when she learns to love again
And it won't make sense right now but you're still her friend
And then you let her down easy
A perfect pop song. The beat of the song makes you want to dance. The video, all a single shot, feels like Robyn is pouring her heart out, being completely raw. And the lyrics are so clever. I've never looked up who wrote the song and I'm afraid to. I want it desperately to be Robyn who wrote this song. I don't want to find out it was some pop producing hit machine behind the scenes.
We have three parties involved in this song. Robyn, the new girlfriend. Her lover, whom she seems to just have met. And her lover's current girlfriend. There's not too many songs that deal with this sensitive and difficult situation. On one hand, you're excited for the new romance in this song. You want it to work. We've all been there. It's a celebration of love. On the other hand, there's her lover's old girlfriend. Or soon to be old girlfriend. We've all been there too. We've been passed up for another. It's a rough situation to deal with. You're left alone to deal with loss. But your lover is off with another, experiencing the joy of that new relationship. And Robyn is there just happy, she can be an objective outsider. She can dole out the advice given in this song. Be kind on the let down. I get it but it's time. She needs to know. It sounds like Robyn's been there before too.
